
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After putting up 27 points in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, senior guard JJ Quinerly has been named the WVU Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
With the points, Quinerly surpassed the 2,000-career points mark. She currently sits with 2,008 points across 125 games to sit alone in third place on the program’s all-time scoring list.
Additionally in the contest, the senior added seven steals for a program tournament record along with seven assists and four rebounds.
The Mountaineers will face No. 3 seed North Carolina on Monday evening in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Tipoff time inside Carmichael Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers continue its postseason run when they take on No. 3-seeded North Carolina on Monday, March 24, inside Carmichael Arena … tipoff for the contest is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2 … WVU looks to advance to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history and the first time since 1992.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers defeated Columbia on Saturday, March 22, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament … WVU is now 11-1 all time in the tournament in the first round when they are a single digit seed … JJ Quinerly led the way with 27 points, seven steals and seven assists as Jordan Harrison added 22 points … Quinerly scored her 2,000th point in the win to become just the fourth Mountaineers to surpass the point total for a career … additionally, Quinerly is now the programs career tournament leader in points scored and steals with 90 and 17, respectively.

This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers concluded the 2024-25 season at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Last Week in Wrestling: Fifth-year Peyton Hall placed third at 165 pounds at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia … with the finish, Hall earned his third career All-America honor, becoming just the third Mountaineer to do so … as a team, West Virginia tied for 18th place, marking the first time since 2004-05 that WVU placed in the top 20 in consecutive seasons.
Notes: Hall ends his WVU career as one of the greatest Mountaineer wrestlers in the history of the program … Hall ends as the program’s leader in career wins, a three-time All-American at 165 pounds, a Big 12 champion, tied for most career wins at the NCAA Championships (17) in program history and the only Mountaineer to qualify for five NCAA Championships.
This Week in Gymnastics: West Virginia will learn its fate in the 2025 NCAA Regional Championships when the NCAA Selection Show airs on Monday, March 24, at 12 p.m. ET … the show will be broadcast live on ESPNU … WVU will be selected to one of four regional sites throughout the country, including University Park, Tuscaloosa, Salt Lake City or Seattle … the regional championships are tabbed for April 2-5.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU completed competition at the 2025 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship on March 22 inside the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah … the Mountaineers finished in seventh place with a team score of 194.875 … WVU tallied scores of 48.675 on vault, 48.125 on the uneven bars, 48.975 on balance beam and 49.1 on floor exercise … the meet was highlighted by freshman Sophia Rice’s runner-up finish on floor exercise, after scoring a career-best 9.9 … she tied for second place with Utah’s Grace McCallum … West Virginia competed against BYU and Iowa State in the first session, as the Cougars led the way with a 196.275 and the Cyclones posted a 195.775.
Notes: Rice was named to the Big 12 All-Championship Team on floor with the finish, marking WVU’s first floor honoree at the championship since 2017 and just the third all-time … the Morgantown, West Virginia, native moved WVU’s total number of All-Championship Team honorees to 12 all-time … in the final regular-season Road to Nationals rankings of the 2025 season, the Mountaineers No. 36, qualifying them to the 2025 NCAA Regional Championships … the appearance will mark WVU’s first since 2023, as well as its 44th all-time … WVU also sits at No. 35 on vault, No. 47 on bars, No. 34 on beam and No. 33 on floor … individually, senior Anna Leigh ranks No. 43 nationally, No. 4 in the Big 12 and No. 8 in the southeast region on floor with an NQS of 9.905 … on vault, freshman Karleigh DiCello ranks No. 12 in the conference and No. 16 in the region with an NQS of 9.84, while she also is No. 14 in the Big 12 and No. 17 in the region on beam (9.85 NQS) … Rice also ranks No. 14 in the Big 12 and No. 18 in the region with a 9.835 NQS.

Last week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers began the 2025 outdoor season last weekend at the Marty Pushkin and USF Alumni Invitational on March 21-22 in Morgantown, West Virginia and Tampa, Florida … redshirt sophomore Annishka McDonald highlighted the weekend after finishing second in the high jump in Tampa with a career-high mark of 1.78 meters … with the finish, McDonald moved to No. 3 all time in outdoor history.
This week in Rowing: West Virginia will open its spring season, competing with split squads this weekend. One team will compete at the Sunshine State Invitational on Friday, March. 28 and Saturday, March 29, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, while the other squad takes on Robert Morris on Saturday, March 29, at the McPhail Boathouse in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
This Week in Swimming and Diving: Sophomore Owen Recker competes at the Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from March 26-29, at Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington.

Last week in Golf: The golf team posted its best finish at the Schenkel Invitational by placing sixth in the three-day event in Statesboro, Georgia … the Mountaineers shot 3-under-par in the final round to finish +2 for the tournament with rounds of 293-288-285=866 in the 14-team field … Kaleb Wilson led WVU by shooting Even par for the event with rounds of 74-70-72=216 to finish tied for 23rd place … Todd Duncan tied for 31st place with rounds of 74-73-72=219 (+3), while Max Green tied for 38th place with rounds of 71-78-71=220 (+4) … Carson Kammann posted WVU’s lowest round of the day with a bogey-free, 2-under par 70 and finished tied for 44th place with rounds of 76-75-70=221 (+5) … Westy McCabe also tied for 44th place by shooting 74-70-77=221 (+5).
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia has four games this week, beginning with a home game against Marshall on Tuesday … first pitch against the Thundering Herd is set for 6:30 p.m. … the Mountaineers will then hit the road to take on BYU … first pitch on Thursday and Friday is set for 8:30 p.m. ET while Saturday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers went 3-2 this week with a double midweek sweep against James Madison before taking one of three against Arizona … WVU defeated James Madison, 11-1, on Tuesday … senior Grant Hussey hit a home run in the win … five pitchers combined to allow just one run on three hits … on Wednesday, the Mountaineers defeated JMU,3-1, as three pitchers combined to allow only one run on six hits while striking out 10 … WVU fell 6-4 in 16 innings against Arizona on Friday … juniors Logan Sauve and Skylar King each had two RBI in the game … Mountaineer pitchers threw 11.0 scoreless innings before Arizona scored in the 16th … the Mountaineers bounced back on Saturday with an 11-3 win … junior Sam White had three hits and five RBI while senior Jace Rinehart hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season … West Virginia fell in the series finale, 11-4 … White hit a home run in the contest while Rinehart drove in two runs.
Notes: Friday’s 16-inning game against Arizona was the longest home game in WVU history … it is the second longest game in program history, only behind a 17-inning game against Quantico Marines in 1936 … the Mountaineers struck out 21 batters in the game, the most since 1965 … sophomore Chase Meyer was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after striking out 12 in 5.2 innings last week … Hussey hit his 40th career home run against James Madison, extending his program record … in last week’s polls, WVU came in at No. 13 in Perfect Game, No. 20 in NCBWA, No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, and No. 25 in Baseball America … West Virginia won its 150th game at Kendrick Family Ballpark against JMU on Tuesday.
