It’s an understatement to say that the Peabody Awards are major. The winners — a mix of fresh voices within the documentary, news, public service, and radio/podcast landscapes — are awarded for their powerful stories on social issues that, according to Peabody, “push for truth, social justice, and equity.”
Right now provocative stories meant to enlighten and inspire empathy feel more critical than ever. We’re elated to see that a collection of documentaries supported by Sundance Institute Labs and our 2024 Festival are among the nominees for the 85th annual Peabody Awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on June 1, 2025.
Among the nominees are Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie’s harrowing Sugarcane, which won the Directing Award: U.S. Documentary at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Angela Patton and Natalie Rae’s heartwarming Daughters, winner of the 2024 Fest’s Audience Award: U.S. Documentary and Festival Favorite Award, and Josh Greenbaum’s illuminating Will & Harper, which chronicles the road trip of Will Ferrell and his close friend of 30 years who has come out as a trans woman.
