ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women’s tennis team kicked off action at the three-day Michigan Invitational on Friday afternoon (Jan. 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan matched up against Ohio State in doubles, taking three-of-four matches against the Buckeyes. Piper Charney and Jessica Bernales were teamed up for the first time this season, taking a 6-4 win over Ohio State’s Dani Schoenly and Sydni Ratliff.
Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner, ranked No. 49 as a duo, ran their winning streak to three in a 6-3 victory. Lily Jones and Emily Sartz-Lunde, another first-time duo for U-M, picked up Michigan’s third win over OSU with a 6-3 victory.
In singles action, Fliegner and Sartz-Lunde were each victorious in three sets earlier in the day against a pair of Buckeyes. Fliegner rallied after dropping the first set, dropping just two games over the final two sets in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Nao Nashino. Sartz-Lunde split her first two sets before using a late break in the third to record a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Alessia Cau.
The remainder of the Michigan lineup faced players from Eastern Michigan and Michigan State in the afternoon.
Jones was clinical in picking up her 12th win of the season, winning the first 10 games en route to a 6-0, 6-2 win over EMU’s Iva Daneva. It was much of the same for Bernales, who dropped just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 win against Eastern’s Viki Hazmukova.
Miller grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Marta Komar of EMU to help Michigan complete a sweep of the Eagles. Ava Bruno picked up Michigan’s final singles win of the afternoon, taking a 6-2, 6-4 win over Michigan State’s Hanna Tsitavets.
