Wembanyama was ruled out for the season in February due to a blood clot in his right shoulder. However, it appears that he is on track to be back on the court soon.
The 21-year-old is in recovery and is expected to be back on the court for the 2025-26 season for San Antonio. In the meantime, we could see his first action back on the court for the 2025 EuroBasket tournament.
France is set to compete in the EuroBasket tournament and will be part of Group D alongside Poland, Slovenia, Israel, Belgium, and Iceland. Each team will face the others in their group during the opening stage, with the top four teams advancing to the final phase in Riga from Sept. 6 to Sept. 14.
In the last EuroBasket tournament held in 2022, Spain defeated France in the final. However, if Wembanyama is back in action, France will likely be considered the favorite—or at the very least, one of the top contenders.
The one-time All-Star’s seasons ended abruptly. He finished the season averaging 24.3 points per game, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from three in 46 games and 33.2 minutes of action.
Prior to the blood clot issue, Wembanyama was the overwhelming favorite to win his first Defensive Player of the Year award. While that won’t happen this season, it is bound to happen sometime later in his career.
Wembanyama was the Spurs’ No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and was considered one of the best prospects of all time. Although he has only played two seasons in the NBA, he is proving that to be the case.
The Spurs have missed Wembanyama dearly, but they are in a prime position to collect the No.1 pick for this year’s draft. According to Tankathon, the Spurs have the ninth-best odds of grabbing the pick.
