Here’s an update on Wemby’s recovery from deep vein thrombosis via a French media report.
SAN ANTONIO — According to a report from French site LeEquipe, San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama underwent an operation to correct the deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
According to LeEquipe, the head coach of the French National team, Frédéric Fauthoux, spoke on Wemby and his chances of playing with Team France this summer.
During the chat, Fauthoux mentioned that the Spurs center underwent surgery to correct his blood clot issue and is doing fine. He also added that Wemby is “motivated” to play for France.
“We had Victor before his operation; he is motivated to be part of the team,” Fauthoux said. “But he feels good; everything is going well (in his rehabilitation).”
Wemby has been on blood thinners since being sidelined and surgery is not uncommon to correct thrombosis and the structural issue that is causing it.

Blood clots typically develop from any combination of three factors: damage to blood vessels, sometimes from surgery; repeated overhead overuse; a lack of movement or a long period without movement; and genetics or other outside contributing factors like dehydration or hormone replacement.
Rest, oral medications and surgery are usual for corrective measures however, having it in the shoulder (like Wemby) makes it complicated because the area is closer to the heart and lungs.
The good news is that the Spurs caught the issue early and Wemby should fully recover.
Fauthoux says a decision about his potential to play for France this summer will be made in the future.
“We will see as his physical development progresses; we will make the decision when the time is right, until then, we will be in the dark,” he said.
