In a heartfelt update, Kate Middleton has shared encouraging news about her health. Following her announcement in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer, the Princess of Wales has revealed she is now in remission.
“It is a relief now to be in remission and I remain focused on recovery,” Middleton stated on X on January 14, marking a hopeful milestone in her journey. Her announcement follows her September disclosure that she had completed chemotherapy.
I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year.
My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything.

Understanding remission and its significance
Remission is a critical milestone in cancer treatment, signifying that the disease has responded positively to therapy. According to Dr Neeraj Goel, Director of Oncology Services at the CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, remission can be classified into two types:
- Complete Remission: Cancer is no longer detectable in the body.
- Partial Remission: Cancer has significantly reduced in size or activity but remains present.
Dr Goel explains, “Remission does not guarantee that cancer won’t return, which is why regular follow-ups are essential to monitor for recurrence and ensure timely intervention if needed.”
Recovery from cancer is a holistic journey
Recovery from cancer is multifaceted, encompassing physical, emotional, and practical aspects. Dr Niti Raizada, Principal Director of Medical and Hemato Oncology at Fortis Hospitals in Bengaluru, says, “Achieving remission is significant, but maintaining it requires vigilance, follow-up care, and emotional resilience.”
She added that recovery is a unique and ongoing process that requires patience, support, and self-care.
Physical Recovery
- Regaining strength and energy post-treatment.
- Managing pain, discomfort, and treatment-related side effects like hair loss and fatigue.
- Restoring mobility and flexibility through rehabilitation.
Emotional and Psychological Recovery
- Coping with anxiety and emotional fluctuations.
- Rebuilding self-esteem and finding meaning in a “new normal.”
- Reconnecting with relationships affected by the illness.
Practical Recovery
- Returning to daily life and work.
- Addressing financial and logistical challenges.
- Accessing support services to navigate the complexities of post-treatment life.
While remission is a hopeful state, recurrence is possible. As Dr Goel explains, “Recurrence can happen if microscopic cancer cells remain in the body after treatment. These cells may grow and cause the cancer to return.” Factors influencing recurrence include the type of cancer, treatment received, and individual characteristics. Regular screenings and close monitoring are crucial to detect and manage any recurrence early.
