
Chinese gymnasts took both women’ golds, and Japan and Armenia divided the men’s titles, on the second and last day of finals at the World Cup of Cottbus, Germany, on Sunday.
Armenia’s Artur Davtyan earned his fourth consecutive World Cup of Cottbus vault gold, ahead of silver medalist Nazar Chepurnyi of Ukraine and bronze medalist Niccolo Vannucchi of Italy. Chepurnyi also took silver on vault in 2022, and Vannucchi claimed his second medal of the competition after his bronze on floor exercise in Saturday’s finals.
China’s Zhou Yaqin successfully defended her 2024 title on balance beam, where she took gold over silver medal-winning teammate Zhang Kexin and bronze medalist Yamada Chiharu of Japan. The 22-year-old Yamada also took bronze on uneven bars on Saturday.
On floor exercise, Zhang Yihan of China and Lihie Raz of Israel earned their first World Cup medals by taking gold and silver, respectively, on floor exercise. Zhang Kexin completed her medal sweep in Cottbus with bronze, following her gold on uneven bars and silver on balance beam.
Sugimoto Kaito of Japan won his first World Cup or World Challenge Cup in six years by taking gold on parallel bars. He also placed first on that apparatus at the 2019 World Challenge Cup of Paris. Chepurnyi claimed silver, and Jermain Gruenberg of Netherlands took bronze, the second World Cup or World Challenge Cup of his career. He was also third on parallel bars at the 2023 World Challenge Cup of Varna.
Japan’s Kawakami Shohei reclaimed his 2023 title on horizontal bar, one spot ahead defending silver medalist Robert Tvorogal of Lithuania, who again took silver.
Bronze medalist Mert Kilicer of Türkiye earned his second World Cup or World Challenge Cup medal. He also took bronze on horizontal bar at the 2024 World Challenge Cup of Antalya.
The World Cup series continues with its second competition, the World Cup of Baku taking place March 6-9.
