Alexandroupolis, Greece – January 18 – The USA Women picked up their first win in Greece with a 10-9 win over Israel earlier today in World Cup Division 1 action. Chrissy Flynn scored three goals to lead the offense while Amanda Longan piled up 19 saves in net. Team USA closes out play with a match against Hungary at 8am et/5am pt, the two met earlier in the event with Hungary claiming a 12-7 win. Flynn and Maryn Dempsey got the scoring started early, helping Team USA to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Israel scored the next three goals in a row and built a 3-2 lead with 3:54 to play in the first half. Allison Cohen tied things moments later on a penalty shot at 3-3 but Israel scored the final tally in the first half to lead 4-3 at intermission. Jovana Sekulic scored in the opening thirty seconds of the third quarter to tie the match at 4-4. Israel answered with two straight to lead 6-4. Team USA then went on a run of their own delivering four goals in a row courtesy of Lucy Haaland-Ford, Malia Allen, Sekulic and Charlotte Raisin for an 8-6 lead after three periods.
Israel tied the game at 8-8 early in the fourth quarter but then Flynn took over late to close out the match. She hit from six meters to give the United States a 9-8 lead at the four-minute mark and then converted a critical penalty shot with fifty seconds to play in the game. Israel scored one last time but Team USA did enough to secure the 10-9 victory.
The United States went 3/6 on power plays and 3/5 on penalties while Israel went 4/7 on power plays and 3/3 on penalties.
